Wes Craven Says ‘Scream 5′ Likely to Happen

Wes Craven Says ‘Scream 5′ Likely to Happen

Scream 4 was enough of a box-office disappointment when it opened this spring that it seemed to curtail all the rumors about it being the first of a new Scream trilogy. But like its plucky heroine Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), the Scream franchise isn’t one to die easily. The fourth installment ultimately ended up pulling in about $97 million worldwide on a $40 million budget, apparently enough that director Wes Craven is now saying that a Scream 5 is very likely to happen. Read his comments after the jump.

In an interview with MovieWeb, Craven confirmed that Scream 4 had indeed been intended as the start of a new trilogy.

Going into (Scream 4), the first meeting I had with Kevin Williamson, he did sketch out a Scream 5 and 6. The idea was that we were doing the first in a new trilogy. We had to wait to see if we made enough money on each film to make the next one viable. If that happens, those two will come up with the concepts and an idea that is worth fulfilling.

Scream 4‘s international gross wound up being somewhat short of the “probably $110 million” that executive producer Harvey Weinstein had estimated when he said earlier this year that he was “sure” Craven would do a sequel, but Craven still seems convinced that Scream 5 is likelier to happen than not. ”The odds are that there will be (a Scream 5),” he said. “It is something that [executive producer] Bob Weinstein wants to do. He tends to do what he wants to do. So I am inclined to think that there will be (another sequel).”

Whether Craven would be part of it, however, could be a different story. The director told Shock Till You Drop that he hadn’t yet received a call from Bob Weinstein, and that he didn’t expect to get one “until there’s something down on paper or something a writer can pitch to [him].” Once that happens, Craven will get to decide whether he wants to sign on. “I don’t know. My contract gives me the first look,” he explained to MovieWeb. “If they show me something that is really wonderful? Of course I will be a part of it.”

Of course, if you’ve seen Scream 4, you’ll know that there’s the slight matter of what the storyline will be — the ending left it totally unclear as to what direction the franchise could go in next. On that matter, though, Craven was less forthcoming. “I’d have to kill you if I told you,” he said. “We’re clever at this. Let’s just put it that way.”

Warner Bros. Wants Steven Spielberg to Direct Epic ‘Gods and Kings,’ About the Life of Moses

When a story opens with ‘could Steven Spielberg direct X?’ the answer is almost certainly going to be ‘no.’ Naturally a lot of projects land on or near the desk of one of the biggest directors in the world, and naturally he doesn’t have time for 90% of even the ones he would be tempted to make.

But let’s say that Warner Bros. had a large-scale epic about the life of Moses and wanted Spielberg to make it. What would the chances be?

Deadline says that the director has read the script for Gods and Kings, written by Michael Green and Stuart Hazeldine. And while there are any number of obvious roadblocks that include scheduling and the need for a co-financing deal with DreamWorks, Deadline says “there will be a discussion.”

The film, as Deadline says, follows the full life story of Moses. All the big, expected points are in there: the struggle by the Hebrew slaves against Egypt; the flight out of Egypt; the Burning Bush and the trek across the Red Sea.

The film is based on Old Testament stories, and originated with a treatment by Matti Leshem, who is on as a producer. That’s also one of the writers who kickstarted Paradise Lost, now at Legendary Pictures.

This could be a massive epic on a scale rarely seen, and Spielberg is an obvious choice in many respects; it could also do incredible business.

Is this also the same Moses film for which Darren Aronofsky was reportedly being courted some time ago? This title wasn’t reported at the time, nor were the writers, and that movie was said to focus on the story of Exodus. But this could be the same project, or it may have grown out of that one. And if this does get made, what does that mean for the already slim chances that Aronofsky would get to make his own Biblical epic, Noah?

‘Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close’ Trailer

‘Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close’ Trailer

Here’s the trailer for Stephen Daldry‘s adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer‘s novel Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, based on a script by Eric Roth. The movie has been a curiosity for me for months in part because the book is a piece of post-modernism that doesn’t lend itself easily to adaptation, and in part because Daldry chose a non-actor, Thomas Horn, to play the central role of 11-year old Oskar Schell. Sure, he’s got established stars like Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock as buffers, but that’s still a ballsy move. Get the first taste of what came of that big risk-taking, after the break.

To recap one quick detail, Thomas Horn was a young Jeopardy! winner, and  that exposure lead to his casting in this film. He looks solid interacting with Tom Hanks, who plays his father, but his voice-over in the trailer doesn’t sound natural to me at all. Layer in U2′s ‘Where the Streets Have No Name’ and my warning bells start to go off.

One of my fears with this adaptation was that it might turn into a simplified and very manipulative tearjerker. While Eric Roth has written movies I like (Munich and The Insider, with the latter being a personal favorite) he’s also written scripts like Forrest Gump and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button where, for me, he went way deep into sentiment in a way that hurt the story. And with Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Reader) directing a story for which 9/11 is a central event, I was afraid that tendency would really come forward.

The trailer suggests that it has. Will this film be strong enough to work anyway? The trailer plays as overtly manipulative, but that’s a trailer’s job. If the film feels the same way, might be difficult not to recoil from it.

I think this trailer is going to be a polarizing one. I can see some people really taking to it, while for others the sentiment, the song, the voice-over, and overt 9/11 elements will be a bit turn-off. How did it play for you?

Apple has the HD trailer.

Based on the acclaimed novel of the same name, “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” tells the story of one young boy’s journey from heartbreaking loss to the healing power of self-discovery, set against the backdrop of the tragicevents of September 11. Eleven-year-old Oskar Schell is an exceptional child: amateur inventor, Francophile, pacifist. And after finding a mysterious key that belonged to his father, who died in the World Trade Center on 9/11, he embarks on an exceptional journey–an urgent, secret search through the five boroughs of New York. As Oskar roams the city, he encounters a motley assortment of humanity, who are all survivors in their own ways. Ultimately, Oskar’s journey ends where it began, but with the solace of that most human experience: love.

Anne Hathaway In Full Catwoman Suit On ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Set

After a grueling, spy photo filled shoot in Pittsburgh, PA, Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight Rises has been semi-quietly shooting in Los Angeles, CA for the past few weeks. And while several set photos and videos have leaked of various vehicles, stunts and more, nothing has been particularly exciting. Until now.

A new set of spy photos have surfaced that show Anne Hathaway in what we can only assume in her full Catwoman costume as it’s slightly different from the official photo above. In addition, a video has come online revealing a potentially major spoiler with her character. Check it all out after the jump.

Thanks to Just Jared and Coming Soon for these photos which could all potentially be considered spoilers.

Notice that, as stated in previous reports, it looks as if the costume is basically just the goggles from the top shot, flipped up into ears.

And then there’s this video from Nolan Fans (via Comic Book Movie). It’s very small but there’s a potentially a major spoiler in it about Catwoman. I’ll reveal it after the video.

At about 25 seconds, you’ll see Batman hug someone before loading into the Batwing. That is Anne Hathaway as Catwoman. I guess she’s not as big a villain as one might have thought.

What do you think about this?

Netflix Signs Streaming Deal with DreamWorks Animation, Amazon Signs Fox

Netflix Signs Streaming Deal with DreamWorks Animation, Amazon Signs Fox

After taking a public pounding thanks to its recently announced updates to pricing and subscription models, Netflix finally has a bit of good news to announce. The company has just signed a huge deal with DreamWorks which will bring the studio’s films and TV specials to Netflix’s streaming service.

The accord comes not a moment too soon, as competitor Amazon makes its own big reveal today — a pact to bring 2,000 20th Century Fox films and television episodes to its own instant video service. The clear winner in all of this, however, is streaming, which continues to grow in importance within the home video market. Read more after the jump.

The Netflix-DreamWorks partnership is being touted by the two companies as the first time a major studio has chosen Web streaming over pay TV, signaling an expectation that online video will continue to grow in the near future. DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg called it a “game-changing deal” in line with the “long-term road map of where the industry is headed.” Netflix executive Ted Srandos agreed. “You’re seeing power moving back into the hands of content creators,” he said. “When a company like DreamWorks ends a long-running pay TV deal — when a new buyer in the space steps up — that’s a really interesting landscape shift.”

The DreamWorks catalog — which will include new movies like the upcoming The Croods and Turbo, plus as older ones like Kung Fu Panda and Megamind — will be available for streaming on Netflix starting in 2013. Neither the value nor the length of the Netflix-DreamWorks pact has been revealed, though the New York Times estimates a worth of about $30 million per picture to DreamWorks. The deal replaces an earlier, less profitable one that DreamWorks had with HBO, as HBO agreed to end their deal with the studio two years early. It also allows DreamWorks to continue selling digital downloads; DreamWorks’ previous deal with HBO required that the studio suspend digital sales for a period to allow the network exclusive access.

The DreamWorks deal is a good sign for Netflix, which is still recovering from a massive backlash in the wake of its pricing model change and Qwikster announcement. Earlier this year, the company failed to reach a renewal agreement with Starz, though more recently, it was able to re-up their contract with Discovery.

Meanwhile, Amazon continues to make inroads into the streaming market with its brand new Fox deal. The agreement brings Amazon’s total catalog of titles to about 11,000, and includes such shows as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Arrested Development, and films like Office Space and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. (For comparison, Netflix has roughly 20,000 titles according to All Things D). Netflix will continue streaming the Fox shows and movies it already has, but Amazon will have exclusive access to a few titles, including the much-loved series The Wonder Years.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos expressed his enthusiasm for the thriving Amazon Prime service. “Since launching earlier this year, we have now doubled the number of titles available in Prime instant videos, and there’s still more to come,” he said. The company also recently signed a deal with NBCUniversal Domestic TV Distribution, adding titles like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Gosford Park.

Though Netflix is still the bigger name in the market, its recent misfortunes have tarnished its once golden image. Amazon will become serious competition as it continues adding to its collection of titles. It’s worth noting that price-wise, Amazon’s $79/year Prime service is currently about $17 cheaper per yer than Netflix’s cheapest streaming subscription. Amazon also offers a la carte rentals and digital videos for purchase, at a rate of $3.99 per title and up. As Time points out, however, one major hurdle for Amazon’s service is its incompatibility with video game consoles, Windows phones, and Apple iOS devices. And as other services like Vudu, Dish Network, and Apple continue ramping up their offerings, competition within the streaming market will only get more fierce.

Lionsgate Takes Film Rights to Zombie Video Game ‘Dead Island’

Lionsgate Takes Film Rights to Zombie Video Game ‘Dead Island’
Published on /Film | shared via feedly

When the trailer for the video game Dead Island hit in February of this year, it caused a sensation, and word quickly spread that a movie was in the works. That word turned out to be premature, as the film rights to the game were not packaged and sold quite as neatly as first reports suggested.

But now the rights have been sold, and Lionsgate is the buyer. Thing is, Sean Daniel, the guy who was originally reported by HitFix to be the first rights buyer, will produce the film. The idea is to make Dead Island “an innovation of the zombie genre because of its focus on human emotion, family ties and non-linear storytelling.”

There were some other people involved in the rights kerfuffle that blew up in February when the Dead Island game trailer (below) got a million hits on YouTube in 24 hours. But Sean Daniel is the last man standing, and he’ll get the film going at Lionsgate.

There’s no real movement on the film so far — not even a screenwriter hire. But Joe Drake of Lionsgate told Deadline,

Like the hundreds of journalists and millions of fans who were so passionate and vocal about the Dead Island trailer, we too were awestruck. This is exactly the type of property we’re looking to adapt at Lionsgate: it’s sophisticated, edgy, and a true elevation of a genre that we know and love. It also has built in brand recognition around the world, and franchise potential.

I haven’t yet played the game, and reviews have been mixed, but expect any movie that results from this development deal to be based on only parts of the game. Far more likely that we’ll see something that expands upon and adapts that trailer. In other words, despite the adherence to the title and basic concept behind the game, Dead Island will very likely be Yet Another Zombie Movie, only with a name that is recognizable to game fans.

Ayelet Zurer is Superman’s Kryptonian Mother in ‘Man of Steel’

Ayelet Zurer is Superman’s Kryptonian Mother in ‘Man of Steel’
Published on /Film | shared via feedly

Briefly: There’s been a last-minute change of plans for Zack Snyder‘s Superman film Man of Steel. Julia Ormond was originally set to play Lara Lor-Van, the biological Kryptonian mother of Superman, but for reasons unknown she will no longer be in the film. Now Ayelet Zurer (Angels & Demons, Munich) will play Superman’s mother instead, acting opposite Russell Crowe as Jor-El.

The film has been shooting for some time, as any regular peruser of /Film will know. (So…many…set videos!) Zurer’s scenes will shoot this week, according to Deadline. She’s not likely to have a great many scenes, and because most of her work is likely to be done on stages, we probably won’t get any photo evidence of the work as it is ongoing. So there’s something from the film that will remain relatively obscure until it is released.
