The Hunter

Last summer we got a teaser trailer for the Australian thriller The Hunter, directed by Daniel Nettheim and starring Willem Dafoe as Martin David, a mercenary sent from Europe by a biotech company to the Tasmanian wilderness on a dramatic hunt for the last Tasmanian Tiger. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, and now we have a new full-length trailer for the film that looks like another great man vs. nature thriller to go along with The Grey hitting theaters today as well. Plus, this one has Sam Neill seemingly playing the kindred spirit of Jurassic Park's Dr. Grant. Watch the trailer below!

Watch: New Domestic Trailer for Sci-Fi 'Lockout' Starring Guy Pearce

Lockout

Towards the end of December we caught another trailer for the sci-fi film Escape from M.S. One, but here in the United States the film will be known as Lockout. And now we have another trailer for domestic audiences that brings the action again. The film stars Guy Pearce as a felon hired to go to a Maximum Security space station prison to rescue a girl, Maggie Grace. Guy Pearce hasn't really made the best choices in films lately, but I always look forward to his next project and this looks cool as hell. This could be a return to form for the actor and hopefully a surprisingly good sci-fi flick for 2012. Watch the trailer below!

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

"The island is real." Back before 3D started making its way to respectable films and all the rage hit the big screen, there was the gimmick theme park ride of Journey to the Center of the Earth in 3D with Brendan Fraser and Josh Hutcherson. While the former isn't back for the sequel, the latter star (soon to be seen in The Hunger Games as well), is back with Dwayne Johnson coming along for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. Frankly I don't know why they don't just lose the colon and have the number work as a word, but I digress. It's not my cup of tea, but we have a new trailer with plenty of adventure. Watch!

Aussie actor Joel Edgerton ("Warrior," "The Thing") has sold the dramedy spec script "One Night Stand" to New Regency says The Hollywood Reporter.

The story is described as an honest look at a man and a woman in the aftermath of a one night stand. Edgerton is not attached to star but will executive produce. Regency will start meeting with directors in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, "No Country For Old Men" and "The Road" author Cormac McCarthy has sold his first spec screenplay "The Counselor" to producers Nick Wechsler, Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz reports Deadline.

The story follows a respected lawyer who thinks he can dip a toe into the drug business without getting pulled in, a decision he tries his best to survive. The group are now looking for a filmmaker as they talk to financiers.

I Am Bruce Lee Documentary Trailer

"Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water." There can never be enough Bruce Lee, in movies especially. And now someone has made an entire documentary about his legacy and his spirit. It's titled simply, I Am Bruce Lee, directed by Pete McCormack, and features a whole hell of a lot of celebrities, including Mickey Rourke, Ed O'Neill, Manny Pacquiao, Black Eyed Peas' Taboo, Haywire's Gina Carano and yes, even Kobe Bryant himself pops up in here. This looks like a kick ass doc for a martial arts legend, just exploring who he was and why he was such a legend, but we already know the reasons anyway. Check it out!

This Week in Film: A Dangerous Method, Pariah, The Iron Lady, La Boheme, Print Generation, Jack Chambers shorts, and what's new on DVD and Blu-Ray

Toronto FilmThis Week in Film rounds up noteworthy new releases in theatres, as well as key DVD / Blu-Ray releases, festivals, and other cinema-related events happening in Toronto.

IN THEATRES

A Dangerous Method (Varsity, Scotiabank)

For those who were unable to snag a ticket to the Canada's Top 10 screening of Cronenberg's latest, it will be of some comfort to learn that it will be opening the very next day in general release. How well the film will sit with audiences, or even the Canadian master's fanbase, is another story. Taking a backseat are his signature motifs of body horror and camp aesthetics; this is a heady film driven by dialogue and subtle character developments, and it seems to be intentionally (fittingly) repressing itself. Those primarily drawn to the sexual wing of Cronenberg's oeuvre will have much to chew on, even if that is all there is to chew on, and in the most cerebral manner imaginable. It's a film to see several times, and I'm leaning toward the possibility that, in the end, it's worth that extra effort.

Pariah (AMC Yonge & Dundas)

An urban companion piece to Céline Sciamma's Tomboy, which opened last month at the TIFF Bell Lightbox, this Brooklyn-set coming-of-ager from director Dee Rees is, for my money, the more poetic and affecting film. Like Sciamma's film, it's a straightforward telling of a girl trying to balance her non-hetero desires with living a 'normal' life in the eyes of her parents. Adepero Oduye is brilliant as Alike, giving the film its sturdy emotional center. It was a hit in Sundance last year, and has the ability to be a sleeper hit in the cinemas, too.

The Iron Lady (Varsity, AMC Yonge & Dundas)

A biopic on Margaret Thatcher. It looks like this year's The Queen, only a little more unnecessary. I'm sure Meryl Streep will be riveting, give a great impersonation, etc., but this has the veneer of a by-numbers Oscar grab for an actress who really doesn't need to do that any more. Either way, it appears to be working; last I heard she was the Best Actress favourite. Wake the world up when she goes for something like Adaptation again.

SPECIAL SCREENINGS

Silent Sundays: La Bohème - Sunday, January 15 at 4PM
La Boheme FilmOne of Toronto's best recurring series - albeit all too infrequent these days - is Revue Cinema's Silent Sundays, and this week they offer up another rarely-screened gem. King Vidor, whose awesome name I still cannot believe is real, translates Giacomo Puccini's opera to the screen for the first time. Starring two of the silent era's biggest stars (John Gilbert and LIllian Gish), this was a bona fide hit back in 1926, and yet it isn't even available anywhere on DVD. Really any silent film is a must-see, but this one should be especially high up on any cinephiles essential lists. Will feature live piano accompaniment by the acclaimed William O'Meara.

Early Monthly Segments: Print Generation - Monday, January 16 at 6PM
Toronto FilmThis month's edition to the popular avant-garde series is a special release party for the PUBLIC issue #44, which is dedicated to discussions and talks with took place during the 2010 Experimental Media Congress held in Toronto. If the release of the journal weren't enough, there'll also be a screening of J.J. Murphy's sublime 1974 film Print Generation. The 50-minute film traces the degradation and regeneration of home movie images, set against a sonic backdrop of ocean waves that inverts the deterioration process seen in the images. The event begins at 6PM at the Gladstone Art Bar, but the screening will start at 6:30 sharp, so don't be late. $5 suggested donations are accepted at the doors.

Short Films by Jack Chambers - Wednesday, January 18 at 7PM
Jack ChambersIf you were intrigued by Early Monthly Segments' screening of The Hart of London last month, here's an opportunity to see the rest of his filmic output (Note - if you missed the aforementioned screening, it will also be screening at the AGO the following week). Chambers' concerns with nature and its parallel life cycles are on full display in all four of these short-to-medium-length films. This screening will be attended by legendary filmmaker, professor, and writer R. Bruce Elder, who will introduce and discuss the films throughout the evening. This screening, which takes place at the AGO's Jackman Hall, is free to the public; entrance is granted on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Superhero Bits: The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Dark Knight Rises, Thor 2, Super Bowl

How good does Robert Downey Jr. think Iron Man 3 could possibly be? Which superhero movies might have Super Bowl commercials and which might not? What’s the meaning of the Lazarus Pit in The Dark Knight Rises? Will Jaimie Alexander appear in Thor 2 or The Avengers? Who might perform the theme song for The Avengers and is there a warm way to dress your baby up as Batman or Robin? Read about all this and more in today’s Superhero Bits.

Theater standees for The Avengers are beginning to appear. LAgraphico designed them, Comic Book News posted ‘em.

Robert Downey Jr. spoke to Collider and hyped up Iron Man 3 even more:

I think that we have an opportunity with the third Iron Man to make the best of the three, and maybe one of the better superhero movies that’s ever been made.  But I think we have to remember what made the first one good.  It was very character-driven.  It was very odd.  It was kind of outrageous.  And so I think we have to have the courage to trust that the audience is really kind of cool, and smart.

Brothers Brick (via Gizmodo) posted this homemade Lego TV that doubles as an awesome Superman memento. Head to those links to see it in video form.

Michael Fassbender spoke to Coming Soon about his X-Men First Class 2 expectations:

I have no choice. They contracted me for two options. I gotta get down with it. We’re at the ground level, but yeah I think there’s going to be another one.

Buzzfeed found these super cute Batman and Robin costumes for your baby that you can get right here (via Fashionably Geek).

The Sports Hero broke down The Dark Knight Rises trailer in detail and while you’ve likely read that before, his theory on how the “Lazarus Pit” plays into the movie is new and intriguing.

"Hansel" Delayed Again Until January

"Hansel" Delayed Again Until January
Published on Dark Horizons - General Feed | shared via feedly

Paramount and MGM have pushed back the release of the Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton action fantasy tale "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters" by almost a year from its original date says The Hollywood Reporter.

'Hansel' was originally slated for March 2nd this year. The other week came reports that it had been pushed back to a late Summer/early Fall date. Now however an official date has been set by the studio - January 11th 2013.

The reasons for the delay primarily seems to be due to Renner's exposure in "The Avengers" and "The Bourne Legacy" to help push up his profile.

The report also claims the 3D materials are only now coming in so the studio needs time to prep and market them. (Update: One of the artists on the film claims "the 3D materials are practically done and have been worked diligently on and "coming in" since last summer")

Finally the studio has had enough success for the fiscal quarter with "Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol" and "The Devil Inside", another hit isn't needed in the period. Plus the $34.5 million opening of 'Devil' showed that January can be a great time to launch films.

The studio has also pushed back the long-delayed Eddie Murphy comedy "A Thousand Words" yet again, this time by only a month though - it'll now open April 20th.

Robert Downey Jr. turned up at the Brazilian premiere of "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" this week and told Omelete of his high hopes for the upcoming third "Iron Man" film.

“I think that we have an opportunity with the third Iron Man to make the best of the three, and maybe one of the better superhero movies that’s ever been made. But I think we have to remember what made the first one good. It was very character-driven. It was very odd. It was kind of outrageous. And so I think we have to have the courage to trust that the audience is really kind of cool, and smart” he says.

He was also asked about reports that he's been linked to play Gepetto in a take on "Pinocchio" that Tim Burton is developing for Disney. Downey replied “I want to talk to him about it, yeah! C’mon, it’s Tim Burton.”

The Front Line Official Trailer

"This is a story about three million soldiers who fought in the war, not remembering the reason anymore, and died wishing for the end of it." Well Go USA Entertainment has debuted the official US trailer via Apple for Hun Jang's South Korean war action film The Front Line, about the Korean War and the many soldiers who fought in it. This looks quite spectacular and riveting, I'm impressed. A fairly easy comparison to make, but it seems like another South Korean Saving Private Ryan, this time telling the story of their own tragic and deadly civil war. The production in this looks quite stunning, I definitely want to catch it. Watch below!
