"The Departed" and "Kingdom of Heaven" scribe William Monahan has been hired to do some work on the script for the "Sin City" sequel reports Heat Vision.

Monahan is reportedly "supplementing a draft" recently completed by comic creator Frank Miller. Robert Rodriguez directs this follow-up to the 2005 hit graphic novel adaptation.

Monahan has numerous scripts of his on the way from Joseph Kosinski's "Horizons", to the just announced Martin Scorsese-directed remake of James Toback's 1974 drama "The Gambler". The news of the latter caught everyone by surprise, including Toback himself who penned a fascinating letter about it.

Superman's Body Up Close and Personal

New spy photos have emerged today via Facebook that finally give us some close-up shots of actor Henry Cavill in the Superman suit on the Illinois set of "Man of Steel".

The shots have him without the cape in between takes, probably due to the weight. Because of this it allows us to get a look at the details of the suit which is definitely more alien-esque with some ornate black ribbing on the sides, lower back and down his thighs. There's padding all over to give a very defined muscular appearance (and a well sculpted crotch), while the red of the S and the boots really stands out against the muted blue of the rest of the outfit.

I’ve defaulted to the officially-released image of Henry Cavill as Superman in Zack Snyder‘s now-shooting Man of Steel, but after the break you’ll find far more detailed set pics that show off quite a few bits of his costume that we haven’t yet seen. I figure there are some of you who want to wait for more official pics or the trailer to see all the weird new costume details — and there are quite a few — but for those ready now, hit the jump.

SuperHeroHype posted the images below, from  ‘Kal-El.9859′ and ‘wacots,’ and they reveal quite a few things about the costume. First, don’t get too worried about the lack of cape in some shots — looks like it can be removed (is that velcro?) to make Henry Cavill’s life easier between takes and while choreographing fights. It’s possible, too, that some shots will have a cape added digitally.

Here you can see the detail on Supes’ gauntlet-like cuffs, and the weird embellishments that run up his thighs, around his kidneys and up the back of the costume. It certainly makes for a more alien look — this isn’t something that seems to have come out of Smallville. (Compare these images to the full-size version of the first official image — some of the details were hinted at there.) The pics also show a soldier of some sort and a stuntman wearing a mo-cap suit — we don’t know who the latter is standing in for.

None of this costume stuff, of course, tells us if the movie is actually going to be good. But it’s something to talk about and pore over now. So, for those who are much bigger Superman fans, care to tell everyone else what the comic-based origin of some of these costume flourishes are? (Assuming there are comic-based origins?)

Man of Steel also stars Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon, Antje Traue, Russell Crowe, Julia Ormond, Christopher Meloni, Harry Lennix and Laurence Fishburne. It is scheduled for release on June 14, 2013.

Al Pacino in Wilde Salome

"I've got too much to do!" I'm not sure what this is or where it came from, but Yahoo has debuted a trailer for a docu-drama film starring and directed by Al Pacino called Wilde Salome. The film is about Pacino's obsession with, and attempt to perform, the Oscar Wilde play Salome. "I'm going to do your play, I'm going to do a movie of the play, and I'm doing a documentary all at the same time" is exactly how he explains it in the teaser trailer. I didn't even know this existed, but no worries, it's Pacino so bring it on. However, I feel like this is one of those films that you might walk out thinking "what the heck did I just watch?" Have fun! ...

‘Hangtown,’ a Western Pitch From ‘Battlestar Galactica’ Producer Ron Moore, Bought By ABC

‘Hangtown,’ a Western Pitch From ‘Battlestar Galactica’ Producer Ron Moore, Bought By ABC

Ever since Ron Moore chose to end his successful reboot of Battlestar Galactica he’s been doing his best to get another series on television. He had ocean and magic shows, The McCulloch and 17th Precinct, set up at NBC and a remake of Wild Wild West in development at CBS. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like any of them are going to make it to network. Deadline is reporting that, unfazed, Moore has just sold a western pitch called Hangtown to ABC. It’s the latest show in the Western genre – a genre that hasn’t fared too well on the big screen in recent years – to gain traction on the small screen. Read what it’s about and more after the jump.

Deadline broke the news of this deal and describe the show as follows:

Described as a Western with a procedural overlay, Hangtown is set in the early 1900s in a frontier town that’s begun rapidly expanding with the coming of the railroad. It centers on three characters: the Marshal, a Matt Dillon/Clint Eastwood type who prefers to solve crimes by his instinct; a young  doctor from the East Coast who is interested in using the new field of forensics to solve crimes; and a young woman writer who is trying to sell dime novels to the publishing houses in New York about crime in the Wild West. Every week the instincts of the Marshal, the science of the doctor, and the young woman’s drive to tell a rousing good yarn to her editors combine to solve crimes in a wide-open, lawless town.

So it’s sort of CSI meets Bonanza or something like that. Seems that it could work.

Despite last year’s hit Coen Brothers movie True Grit, the Western genre has been a tough sell to mainstream movie audiences in recent years. Even when a new spin is put on it – say in Rango or Cowboys & Aliens – it’s rarely a runaway hit. However, with TV shows like AMC’s Hell on Wheels set to premiere soon and at least three other westerns in various stages of TV development over the past two years, not including Hangtown, maybe the west will be won at home and not in the theater.

Zoe Saldana to Play Angelic Action in ‘Dominion’

Briefly: Not a lot of details on this one just yet, but it looks like Alex Proyas isn’t the only one getting into the ‘action movie with angels’ game. Zoe Saldana has closed a deal to produce and star in a film called Dominion. It’s a Paramount picture, based on a pitch by Dean McCreary and Chester Hastings. We don’t know the plot outright, but in announcing the film THR says Saldana will play a woman “who is half-human, half-angel.”

It’s a good move for Salanda on the eve of the opening of action movie Colombiana, which is getting pans across the board. Since her mid-sized Star Trek appearance and much larger Avatar role, she’s been able to do better material, but there are still a good few shrug-worthy films on her recent resume. Will Dominion be different? At this point it is impossible to tell, but stepping in as a producer can’t be a bad thing.

Martin Scorsese and William Monahan To Remake ‘The Gambler;’ Leonardo DiCaprio Attached

As audiences wait to see what Martin Scorsese has done by moving outside his comfort zone and working with 3D in a family movie, the legendary director is already looking ahead to get back in his comfort zone with a gritty New York drama. He’s currently developing a remake of the 1974 film The Gambler with screenwriter William Monahan. The original film starred James Caan in a Golden Globe nominated performance as a New York English professor, beloved by his students, who wrestles with a serious gambling addition, continually going deeper and deeper into debt. Leonardo DiCaprio is attached to play the role in the remake. There’s more after the break.

The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline broke the news of the latest team up from the Oscar-winning team behind The Departed. Unlike that film, though, The Gambler is set up at Paramount.

With this film just going into development, Monahan will have to write the screenplay before filming can begin an that leaves Scorsese plenty of time to work on a number of other projects. The Hollywood Reporter article seems to agree with a previous report that he’ll next do Silence, an adaptation of a novel by Shusaku Endo about “a Jesuit missionary sent to seventeenth century Japan.” After that, he’s got any number of projects he can tackle, including The Gambler. Here are just a few of the films he’s been attached to, rumored to be attached to or actively developing. Click on each for the latest.

Some of those are more concrete than others but, when you add The Gambler to the list with Silence, Mr. Scorsese has plenty he can do for the next two decades if he stopped looking at new material today.

Have you seen The Gambler? Do you think it’s ripe for a remake?

The Rum Diary Trailer

Comes for the Madness, Stay for a Drink! Johnny Depp is finally back for more Hunter S. Thompson wackiness! After delaying this film for quite a while, FilmDistrict has finally launched the first official trailer for The Rum Diary, based off of Hunter S. Thompson's novel, starring Johnny Depp as Paul Kemp, a divorced alcoholic who heads down to San Juan to work as a journalist for the newspaper. This is as wacky as it sounds, but looks awesome, at least like it's going to be insanely fun to watch. The cast includes Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart, Giovanni Ribisi and Richard Jenkins. "No such thing as 470 proof alcohol!" ...
